Chobham Farm is a residential development in Stratford, London, featuring a bespoke playground tower designed to integrate seamlessly into the urban landscape. The concept was created by Churchman Thornhill Finch architects, with Duncan & Grove appointed as the specialist design-and-build playground contractor. We developed a detailed 3D model of the structure, working closely with a structural engineer to ensure stability and durability. To meet BS EN 1176 safety standards, we collaborated with a play inspector, ensuring the playground was fully compliant before installation.
The structure is built around a central steel column, with a series of radiating spokes supporting curved glulam beams, forming an elegant yet robust climbing framework. Integrated into the design is a stainless steel tube slide, a series of climbing ropes and net play areas, and robinia cladding and climbing holds, selected for their durability and natural aesthetic. The glulam beams are mounted on steel shoes, lifting them out of ground contact to extend the lifespan of the structure and ensure long-term resilience in a public play environment.
Designed as a landmark play feature, this architecturally-led playground combines structural integrity, natural materials, and adventurous play elements. By blending timber and steel, it offers a sustainable, high-quality play experience that enhances the surrounding residential development. The result is a bespoke playground that meets both aesthetic and functional demands, creating an engaging and durable space for children while aligning with the design vision of the masterplan.
